This old dog is learning

I help take care of a beautiful dog named Raleigh. He is the cutest thing, and I love him to bits! He’s a little quirky, but aren’t we all?

The other day I let Raleigh out to do his thing. We went through the sliding glass doors out onto the deck leading to the back yard. As usual, I have to practically chase him off the deck to go do his business. He goes trotting off into the yard, then stops about 10 feet from me and turns around to see if I’m still standing there (he hates being left alone anywhere). For a split second, I want to run out there and go with him. But I stop myself. “You have to let go, Eva,” I tell myself. “He won’t learn to be independent if you keep coddling him.”

Instead, I tell him, “Go on, Raleigh. I’ll be right here waiting for you.”

A dog is teaching me how to parent. Sigh.

  1. I loved this post because it was a mirror of my doggie, Mema. She is the most adorable PugRussell and I have been her mommy since she was 6 wks old..She too hates to leave the porch to do her thing, especially in the cold of winter, but with my encouragement, and my image at the door, she will leave but often looks back to see if I am still there..These darlings are so dependent on us. And we do love them so…

  3. Kat,

I am learning that love is based on mutual trust.

You never lose someone who truly loves you. They always have your back. Just turn around and look.

  4. i don’t have children in my life, but my feline boys, freddie and emile, share a deep bond with me. they have been such a comfort and joy over the last 5 1/2 yrs. our spirits are mingled; but, i also know that at some point, w/ age, they will know when it’s time to let go. most species know when it’s that time.
